Morning: Hotel Pickup and Transfer to Longqing Gorge
Start your day with a convenient hotel pickup by your private guide and driver in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. Your journey begins with a scenic drive to Longqing Gorge, located in Beijing's northern Yanqing District, about 2 hours from downtown Beijing. Known for its breathtaking natural beauty, Longqing Gorge is often compared to Guilin for its dramatic cliffs, serene waters, and lush surroundings.
Explore Longqing Gorge
Upon arrival, take a cable car up to the Longqing Gorge dam, where you’ll enjoy stunning views of the gorge and its emerald green waters. From there, embark on a leisurely boat ride through the narrow gorge, gliding past towering cliffs and picturesque rock formations. The boat ride is the perfect way to immerse yourself in the tranquility of this "natural wonder," as the winding river offers panoramic views of rocky peaks, hidden caves, and cascading waterfalls.
For the adventurous, there’s an option to add on activities such as a bungee jump or a visit to the Dragon Escalator, a 258-meter-long dragon-shaped outdoor escalator that offers a unique way to access the gorge’s highest points. The site is also famous for its winter ice festival, where colorful ice sculptures light up the gorge (if traveling during winter months).
Local Lunch (Own Expense)
After a morning of exploring Longqing Gorge, take a break for a traditional Chinese lunch at a local restaurant. Your guide can recommend the best spots based on your preferences, allowing you to enjoy regional specialties from Beijing or Yanqing’s local cuisine.
Afternoon: Visit Guyaju Caves
Following lunch, head to the mysterious Guyaju Caves, a short drive from Longqing Gorge. This ancient site, often referred to as “China’s largest cave dwelling complex,” dates back over 1,000 years and was carved directly into the cliffside. Explore the 140+ caves, which were once used as homes by the ancient settlers. As you wander through the maze of rooms, halls, and passageways, you’ll gain insight into the incredible ingenuity and craftsmanship of this lost civilization.
The layout of the caves varies greatly, with some chambers being multi-room dwellings, while others are single, small caves carved high into the cliffs. Your guide will share the history and legends behind this site, and you’ll have time to take in the spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Guyaju Caves remain a hidden gem and offer a peaceful, uncrowded experience for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Return to Beijing
After a full day of exploration, relax during the scenic drive back to Beijing. You’ll be dropped off directly at your hotel, making this a hassle-free and enriching day trip.
